Day Stroll: Gingerbread House Competition

Every year at Peddler’s Village, talented gingerbread artists come together and create architectural masterpieces. From stained glass sugar windows to M&M tiled roofs, they display their decorating wizardry in the annual competition.  Artists also break through the traditional gingerbread house barriers, recreating famous landmarks, nursery rhyme scenes, and there’s even a green category this year to promote recycling.  The kids also test their creativity with their own judging categories.  It is a fun and wonderful way to celebrate the holidays and everything gingerbread.

I love the candy wafer roof and the chimney.  They make the house look so inviting.

This rowboat scene proves that not only houses can be made from gingerbread.

I’ve seen many materials used for logs before, but never thought about using twizzlers as a filler in between the logs.

They add support and festive color to the treehouse.

I love sugar work, especially when it is used to make glass.  The diamond details are amazing.

My favorite part of this lighthouse gingerbread house is the lobster traps bobbing in the waves.  So creative!

Christmas is hard on Santa, so I can imagine that this is exactly what he does on December 26th.

This nursery rhyme scene falls under the Unusual 3 Dimensional category.  I love the icing work on the bird.

A gingerbread house competition wouldn’t be complete without a building from Disney World.

It was wonderful seeing all of the talent at this year’s competition.  There are definitely some techniques I would like to apply to my own cookie decorating.  And who knows, with a little practice, I might end up with an entire gingerbread house one day!

Happy Strolling,

Natalie
